Breast reduction for back and neck pain

For women with heavy breasts, back and neck pain often comes from carrying extra weight on the chest all day. Breast reduction is one of the operations with the highest satisfaction rates in plastic surgery, mostly because of the physical relief.

Signs heavy breasts are causing your symptoms

  • Upper back, neck or shoulder pain that physiotherapy hasn't fixed
  • Deep grooves on the shoulders from bra straps
  • Recurrent rashes or fungal infection under the breasts
  • Tingling in the hands from posture
  • Difficulty running, exercising or finding clothes that fit

What surgery involves

Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed from the lower part of the breast, the nipple is moved higher, and the breast is reshaped to be smaller and lifted. The operation takes 2.5–4 hours under general anaesthesia, with one night in hospital.

Scars

Scars run around the areola and down to the fold under the breast, sometimes also along the fold. They are hidden by a bra or swimsuit and fade over 12 months.

Breastfeeding

Many women can still breastfeed afterwards because the nipple stays connected to the tissue beneath, though the chance is lower than without surgery.

Insurance

When symptoms are documented, breast reduction may be covered as a medical procedure. Keep records of physiotherapy, pain treatment and skin infections.

Recovery

Most women are back at desk work in 2 weeks and exercising at 6 weeks. Many say the back and neck pain eases within weeks.
