Your options
Silicone gel implants. Placed through a 4–5 cm cut in the fold under the breast, either behind the breast tissue or partly behind the chest muscle. Round or anatomical (teardrop) shapes are available.
Fat transfer (lipo-augmentation). Fat is removed by liposuction from the belly or thighs, purified and injected in small amounts into the breasts. No implant, no scar on the breast.
Composite (implant plus fat). Fat is layered over an implant in women with very thin tissue to hide the implant edges.
Choosing size
Size is chosen by measuring your chest width, breast base and skin stretch, not only by cup size. You try sizers in a bra at the consultation. The aim is a size that suits your frame and stays comfortable.
Recovery
- Days 1–3: tightness across the chest, more if the implant is under the muscle.
- Week 1: back to desk work; no lifting heavy bags.
- Weeks 2–6: support bra day and night; no underwire.
- Month 3: implants settle into their final position.
Safety
Possible complications include capsular contracture (hardening), implant malposition, change in nipple sensation and, rarely, implant rupture. Breast implants have a rare association with a lymphoma called BIA-ALCL, mostly with textured implants. Implants or fat transfer: which is better?
Implants give a predictable increase of one to two cup sizes or more. Fat transfer gives a smaller, softer increase (usually up to one cup), uses your own tissue and slims the area the fat is taken from, but some fat is absorbed and a second session may be needed.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
Most women can. The usual cut under the breast fold does not touch the milk ducts or nipple.
Do breast implants need to be replaced?
Modern silicone implants don't have a fixed expiry date. Many last 10–20 years or more. They are replaced if a problem such as capsular contracture or rupture develops, or if you want a change in size.
Is the consultation private?
Yes. Consultations are one-to-one with a female attendant present for examination. You can bring your partner or a family member if you want.
