Types of scars and how they're treated
| Scar | What it looks like | Common treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Wide or stretched | Flat but broad | Excision and layered re-closure |
| Raised (hypertrophic) | Red, thick, within the wound line | Silicone gel, steroid injection, pressure |
| Keloid | Grows beyond the original wound | Steroid injection, silicone, surgery with follow-up therapy |
| Contracture | Tight band limiting movement | Z-plasty, skin graft or flap |
| Depressed / tethered | Sunken, stuck down | Subcision, fat grafting, fillers |
| Acne scars | Pits, rolling or boxcar | Subcision, microneedling, PRP, peels |
| Colour mismatch | White or dark patch | Tattooing, laser, vitiligo-type grafting |
Acne scars
Pitted acne scars come in three types, ice pick, boxcar and rolling, and each responds to a different method. Most people need a combination: subcision for rolling scars, focal peels or punch excision for deep ice pick scars, and a course of microneedling with PRP or laser for texture. Active acne is controlled first. See acne scar treatment compared.
C-section and surgery scars
Scars from caesarean sections, thyroid surgery, appendix or gallbladder operations and stitched accident wounds are often wide, raised or puckered. They are revised by cutting out the scar and closing the skin in layers without tension. A C-section scar with an overhanging fold of skin may do better with a mini tummy tuck.
Burn scars and contractures
Burn scars that pull on the neck, armpit, elbow, hand or eyelids are treated by releasing the tight band and covering the gap with a skin graft or a local flap. This is a large part of Dr. Vikrant's reconstructive work, and his research includes a published study of post-burn contractures. See burn treatment, and in Hinglish, jalne ke baad chamdi sikudna. For keloids, read keloid aur purane nishaan ka ilaj.
Aftercare
- Keep the wound clean and dry until stitches are removed (5–10 days).
- Massage and silicone gel or sheets from 2–3 weeks.
- Strict sun protection for 6 months to stop darkening.
Why choose Dr. Vikrant
Scar revision is the core skill of plastic surgery: placing cuts along natural lines and closing skin without tension. Dr. Vikrant's MCh training and daily reconstructive work at Jharkhand Charitable Hospital mean he treats every type of scar, from a small facial scar to a full burn contracture. Common questions
What does scar revision cost in Ranchi?
Scar revision with Dr. Vikrant starts at ₹25,000. Long scars, burn contractures and scars needing grafts or flaps cost more. Keloid steroid injections are charged per session.
Can a scar be removed completely?
No surgeon can remove a scar completely. Revision replaces a bad scar with a better one: thinner, flatter, in a better direction and closer to your skin colour.
How long should I wait before revising a scar?
Usually 6–12 months after the injury or surgery, because scars keep improving on their own during that time. Scars that pull on a joint or eyelid, or keloids, may be treated earlier.
Can keloids be cured?
Keloids tend to recur if simply cut out. Treatment combines steroid injections, silicone sheets, pressure and, in some cases, surgery followed by steroid or other therapy. Most keloids can be flattened and controlled.
What about acne scars?
Acne scars are treated with subcision, microneedling with PRP, fillers for depressed scars, chemical peels and laser, often combined over several sessions.
Can a C-section or other surgery scar be revised?
Yes. A C-section scar that is wide, raised, puckered or has an overhanging fold of skin above it can be revised, usually under local anaesthesia, once it is at least 6–12 months old. If the overhang is large, a mini tummy tuck may give a better result.
How many sessions do acne scars need?
Most people need 3–6 sessions of microneedling, PRP or laser a month apart, often with one subcision session for rolling scars and spot treatment for deep ice pick scars. See acne scar treatment compared.
