Types of tummy tuck
Full abdominoplasty. A hip-to-hip cut low on the abdomen. Skin and fat between the pubic area and the navel are removed, the muscles are stitched together, and the navel is brought out through a new opening.
Mini abdominoplasty. A shorter cut for loose skin below the navel only. The navel is not moved.
Extended or fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty. For skin excess that wraps around the sides after large weight loss.
Lipoabdominoplasty. Liposuction of the flanks and upper abdomen in the same operation for a better waist.
Recovery

- Days 1–2: you walk slightly bent forward. Drains collect fluid.
- Days 3–7: drains removed; home. Binder worn all the time.
- Weeks 2–3: back to desk work, short drives.
- Week 6: binder off; exercise and lifting gradually resume.
- Months 6–12: the scar fades from pink to pale.
Risks
The main risks are fluid collection (seroma), wound healing problems at the centre of the scar (more common in smokers and diabetics), and blood clots. Tummy tuck or liposuction: which do I need?
Liposuction removes fat but cannot tighten loose skin or repair a muscle gap. If you can pinch a fold of loose skin below the navel, or your belly sticks out even when you're slim, a tummy tuck is the right operation. Many patients have both together. See liposuction vs tummy tuck.
Can I have a tummy tuck after a C-section?
Yes. The tummy tuck scar is usually placed at or just below the C-section scar, so the old scar is often removed as part of the operation. Wait at least 6–12 months after delivery and until you have finished breastfeeding.
Should I wait until I have finished having children?
Ideally yes. A later pregnancy will stretch the muscles and skin again. If you plan more children, it is better to wait.
Will stretch marks go?
Stretch marks on the skin that is removed (mostly below the navel) go with it. Those above the navel remain but are pulled lower and flatter.
Can an umbilical hernia be repaired during a tummy tuck?
Often, yes. A small hernia at or near the navel is common after pregnancy and can usually be repaired in the same operation, while the muscles are being tightened. Larger hernias need a separate assessment. Mention any bulge or past hernia at the consultation.
Will a tummy tuck help me lose weight?
Not much. A tummy tuck removes loose skin and some fat from the lower abdomen and tightens the muscles, so the belly is flatter, but the weight removed is small. It works best when you are already close to a stable, healthy weight. If you plan to lose a lot more weight, do that first.
