Botox vs fillers: what's the difference?

Botox smooths lines caused by muscle movement. Fillers restore volume and shape. They treat different problems, which is why many people use both.

The simplest way to tell

Look in the mirror and frown, then relax.

  • Lines that appear when you move and fade at rest (frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet) respond to Botox.
  • Lines or hollows that are there at rest (deep smile lines, under-eye hollows, flat cheeks, thin lips) need fillers.

Using both

A common combination is Botox for the upper face (forehead, frown, crow's feet) and filler for the mid and lower face (cheeks, under-eyes, lips). Treating the cheeks with filler can also lift the smile lines without injecting them directly.

Safety

Both are safe when given by a trained doctor using genuine products. Ask what product is being used and check the packaging. Fillers carry a rare risk of blocking a blood vessel, which is why facial anatomy matters so much. Dr. Vikrant, a plastic surgeon, has taught Botox, filler and thread techniques at workshops in Mumbai and Ranchi.

Who shouldn't have them

Pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with certain nerve-muscle disorders (for Botox), and anyone with an active skin infection at the site.
