Double chin: liposuction, fillers or Botox?

If the double chin is a pocket of fat under the jaw, chin liposuction removes it. If the chin is small or set back and makes the neck look full, chin and jawline fillers improve the profile without removing fat. Botox does not remove a double chin; it slims a wide, muscular jaw. Many people need a combination, and loose neck skin needs a different operation altogether.

First, find out what is causing it

A "double chin" is a look, not one condition. Three things cause it, often together:

Cause How to tell What treats it
Fat under the chin You can pinch a soft roll of fat under the jaw Chin liposuction
A small or receding chin In side view, the chin sits behind the line of the lips, so the neck looks short and full Chin filler (or chin implant surgery)
Loose neck skin and bands Skin hangs when you look down; vertical cords appear when you clench Skin tightening surgery (neck lift); liposuction alone won't fix it

A wide, square jaw from a strong chewing muscle (masseter) is a separate issue. It makes the lower face look heavy but is not a double chin.

At the consultation Dr. Vikrant looks at you from the front and the side, pinches the fat, checks skin quality and the chin's position, and then tells you which of these you have.

Chin liposuction

Best for: a soft pocket of fat under the chin, with skin that still has some snap.

How it is done: under local anaesthesia, with sedation if needed, a thin cannula removes the fat through a tiny cut under the chin. It takes about an hour. You go home the same day.

Recovery: a chin strap is worn for about 1–2 weeks, longer at night if advised. Swelling and mild bruising settle in 1–2 weeks; most people return to work in 2–3 days with a scarf or high collar. The final jawline shows at 2–3 months.

Lasts: the fat cells removed don't come back. Gaining a lot of weight later can still add fat to the area and elsewhere.

Limits: it doesn't tighten loose skin or lengthen a short chin. In older patients with loose skin, liposuction alone can leave the neck looking slack.

Full details are on the liposuction page. For what decides the price, see liposuction cost in Ranchi.

Chin and jawline fillers

Best for: a small or receding chin, or a soft jawline, in someone with little fat under the chin.

How it works: hyaluronic acid filler is injected at the chin and along the jaw bone to bring the chin forward and sharpen the jawline. In side view, the neck looks longer and the "double chin" shadow reduces.

Recovery: 20–30 minutes in the clinic. Mild swelling for a day or two. No time off work.

Lasts: usually 9–18 months in the chin and jaw, then it is gradually absorbed. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed.

Limits: filler adds volume; it removes no fat. Putting filler into a full, fatty chin can make the area look heavier.

Fillers start at ₹18,000 per syringe. The chin often needs 1–2 syringes and the jawline more. See Botox, fillers and thread lift in Ranchi.

Botox for the jaw

Botox relaxes the masseter muscle at the angle of the jaw. Over 6–8 weeks the muscle thins and a square jaw looks slimmer. It lasts about 4–6 months per treatment and works well for people who clench or grind their teeth.

It does not remove fat under the chin and is not a double chin treatment on its own. It is sometimes combined with chin filler for a slimmer, more oval lower face. Botox starts at ₹8,000 per area. The difference between the two injectables is explained in Botox vs fillers.

The liposuction price is the starting price per session on the price list; a small area like the chin is quoted after examination.

Combinations that often work

  • Chin liposuction plus chin filler for someone with both a fatty neck and a receding chin.
  • Chin liposuction with liposuction elsewhere in the same sitting, such as the arms or belly.
  • Chin filler plus jaw Botox for a slimmer, more defined lower face without surgery.

Who should wait or choose something else

  • People still losing a lot of weight: reach a stable weight first.
  • People with a lot of loose neck skin, usually after 50 or after big weight loss: liposuction alone is unlikely to satisfy you.
  • A swelling under the jaw that is hard, growing or one-sided may be a gland or lymph node, not fat. Have it examined first.

Common questions

Can a double chin go away with weight loss alone?

Sometimes. If you are overweight, losing weight reduces fat under the chin along with everywhere else. Some people carry a pocket of fat there even at a healthy weight, often because of genes or jaw shape, and that pocket usually stays. That is the group chin liposuction suits.

Does chin liposuction leave a scar?

The cuts are 3–4 mm, usually one under the chin and sometimes one behind each earlobe. They heal as small marks that are hard to see.

Can young people have chin liposuction?

Yes, adults with good skin elasticity often get the best result, because the skin shrinks back neatly once the fat is removed. Surgery is usually done after 18.
