Liposuction recovery, week by week

Most people are back at a desk job within a week of liposuction, back in the gym at 4–6 weeks, and see their final shape at 3–6 months. Here is what each stage feels like.

The first 48 hours

You wake up wearing a compression garment. The treated areas feel bruised and tight, like after a very hard workout. Pinkish fluid leaks from the small cuts for a day or two. This is the leftover tumescent fluid and is expected, so pads are placed over the cuts.

What to do: walk around every couple of hours, drink plenty of water, take the prescribed tablets on time, and keep the garment on.

Call the hospital if: you have increasing pain on one side, fever above 101°F, breathlessness, calf pain or swelling, or heavy bleeding.

Days 3 to 7

The soreness eases. Swelling peaks around day 3–4 and then starts to come down. Bruises turn yellow-green. You can shower once the doctor allows it, usually after 48 hours, and put the garment back on straight after.

Most people return to desk work and light housework by the end of the first week.

Weeks 2 to 3

Bruising fades. Areas may feel lumpy, hard or numb. This is normal swelling and nerve recovery, and it smooths out over the coming weeks. Gentle massage, if advised, helps. Light exercise such as walking briskly or cycling is fine from week 3.

Weeks 4 to 6

You can stop wearing the garment around week 4–6, as advised at your review. Gym, running and weight training can restart gradually. The shape looks much better, but there is still swelling, especially low on the abdomen and on the thighs.

Months 3 to 6

Swelling settles fully. Numbness recovers. This is when the final contour shows. The small scars fade from pink to pale over 6–12 months.

Common worries

"I look swollen, not slimmer." Normal in the first 2–4 weeks. Judge the result at 3 months, not at 3 weeks.

"The scale shows I weigh more." Fluid given during surgery can add 1–2 kg for a few days.

"There's a hard lump." Usually a firm area of swelling. Show it at your review. A soft, fluid-filled swelling may be a seroma, which is drained in the clinic.

How to keep the result

Fat cells removed by liposuction don't return, but the remaining ones can grow if you gain weight. Keep a stable weight with regular activity and sensible eating.
