Liposuction vs tummy tuck: which one do you need?

Liposuction removes fat. A tummy tuck removes loose skin and tightens separated abdominal muscles. If your problem is skin or muscle, liposuction alone will disappoint you.

Quick self-check

Stand in front of a mirror and answer these:

  1. Can you pinch more than a couple of centimetres of loose, crepey skin below your navel? If yes, you likely need a tummy tuck.
  2. Does your belly bulge even though you're slim, especially after pregnancy? This often means separated muscles (diastasis recti), which only a tummy tuck repairs.
  3. Is the skin firm, and the problem a layer of fat that pinches thick? Liposuction may be enough.
  4. Do you have stretch marks below the navel you'd like gone? A tummy tuck removes most of them; liposuction doesn't.

When both are done together

Many patients benefit from a lipoabdominoplasty: a tummy tuck to tighten the lower abdomen plus liposuction of the flanks and upper abdomen to shape the waist. It gives a better result than either alone, in one recovery period.

Who should wait

  • If you plan more pregnancies, wait for a tummy tuck.
  • If you are still losing weight, reach a stable weight first.
  • If you smoke, stop at least 4 weeks before either operation.

The honest answer

At the consultation, Dr. Vikrant will examine your skin, muscles and fat and tell you which operation fits. Sometimes that answer is the more involved one. Picking liposuction only because it sounds smaller often means a second operation later.
