These times are for a full abdominoplasty, the operation described on the tummy tuck page. A mini tummy tuck, which doesn't move the navel or tighten the upper muscles, usually needs less time. Combined surgery, such as liposuction of the flanks or breast surgery at the same time, can add a few days.
In hospital: the first 1–2 nights
You wake up with an abdominal binder and usually one or two thin drains. You are helped to walk on the first day, bent forward at the waist. Walking early is the single most useful thing you can do: it lowers the risk of blood clots in the legs.
- Calf compression and, if your risk calls for it, blood-thinning injections are used to prevent clots.
- You lie with the head and knees raised so there is no pull on the wound.
- Deep breaths and gentle coughing every hour, holding a pillow against the abdomen, keep the lungs clear.
Days 3 to 7: home
Drains come out once the fluid they collect drops, usually by day 3–7. Some come out in hospital, others at a review visit. At home:
- Walk around the house every hour or two while awake.
- Get in and out of bed by rolling onto your side and pushing up with your arms.
- Keep the binder on all the time except for a quick wash once allowed.
- Constipation is common from painkillers and less movement. Drink water, eat fibre, and ask for a mild laxative if needed.
Weeks 2 and 3
Pain is mild by now. The skin between the navel and the scar is often numb; feeling returns slowly over months and may not return fully in a small area. Most people go back to desk work at 2–3 weeks and can drive short distances once they can brake hard without pain.
Jobs with lifting, long standing or field work need about 4–6 weeks.
Weeks 4 to 6
Swelling comes and goes, often worse in the evening. The abdomen may feel firm and tight, especially above the scar. Longer walks are fine. Keep lifting light, and avoid crunches, planks and heavy household work like lifting buckets.
At the 6-week review, the binder usually stops and you are told how to build up exercise. Start with walking and cycling, then core work over the following weeks.
Months 3 to 12
The final flat shape shows at about 3–6 months. The scar is pink and may feel raised at first, then flattens and pales over 6–12 months. Silicone gel or sheets and sun protection help. If it stays thick or itchy, steroid injections or scar revision can help later.
Warning signs: call the same day
- A swelling that slowly fills and sloshes under the skin after the drains are out. This is usually a fluid collection (seroma) and is drained in the clinic.
- Fever, spreading redness, pus or a bad smell from the wound
- A dark, black or opening area in the middle of the scar. This is more common in smokers and people with diabetes.
- Calf pain or swelling, chest pain or breathlessness. These can mean a blood clot and need emergency care.
Things that help healing
- No smoking, gutkha or khaini for at least 6 weeks before and after. Nicotine is the main cause of wound healing problems after tummy tucks.
- Good sugar control if you have diabetes.
- Protein in every meal: dal, paneer, eggs, curd, chicken or fish.
- Stable weight afterwards. Large gain or a new pregnancy will stretch the skin and muscles again.
Planning the time off
For a full tummy tuck, plan 2–3 weeks away from a desk job and 6 weeks of help with children and heavy housework. Mothers who are still breastfeeding should wait until they have stopped; most surgeons advise waiting 6–12 months after delivery. Common questions
When can I lift my child after a tummy tuck?
Avoid lifting anything heavier than a few kilos, including a toddler, for about 6 weeks, because the tightened muscles are still healing. Plan help at home for the first 2–3 weeks. Sit down and let the child climb onto your lap instead of lifting from the floor.
How long will I walk bent over?
Usually for the first 5–7 days, because the skin of the lower abdomen has been tightened. You straighten up a little more each day. Walking bent is expected, and forcing yourself straight early can strain the wound.
When can I sleep on my side?
Most people sleep on their back, with the head and knees raised, for the first 2 weeks. Side sleeping with a pillow between the knees usually becomes comfortable after that. Sleeping on the stomach waits until about 6 weeks.
